Navy @70: CNS Revives Abandoned Projects, Unveils Housing Facilities in Lagos
The Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS), Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, on Thursday I’m commissioned new accommodation and recreational facilities in Lagos.
He reaffirmed the Nigerian Navy’s commitment to personnel welfare while reviving long-abandoned projects across the Service.
The projects, unveiled at Navy Town, Ojo, Lagos, as part of activities marking the Nigerian Navy Week and the Service’s 70th anniversary, include a Dolphin Golf Club House, a 48-room accommodation block for junior ratings, and newly completed 16 units of two-bedroom flats.
Speaking during the commissioning, Vice Admiral Abbas said the projects reflected the Navy’s deliberate efforts to improve living conditions for personnel and their families while strengthening institutional support infrastructure.
He described the facilities as tangible evidence of the Navy’s transformation from modest beginnings into a modern maritime force over the past seven decades.
“As we celebrate seven decades of dedicated service to our nation, these projects stand as tangible symbols of our progress from modest beginnings to a modern maritime force,” he said.
The Naval Chief noted that the commissioning was particularly significant because it demonstrated the Service’s resolve to complete abandoned but viable projects for the benefit of personnel.
According to him, the 48-room accommodation block for junior ratings had remained abandoned for over five years before the current intervention revived and completed it.
“Today’s commissioning reflects our determination to ensure that abandoned projects across the Service are completed and put to productive use,” Abbas stated.

“Of special note is the 48 x 1 accommodation block, which before today had remained abandoned for over five years after its commencement.”
He assured officers, ratings and civilian staff that more abandoned projects across the Nigerian Navy would be completed under what he described as a prudent and deliberate policy.
Vice Admiral Abbas also highlighted the significance of the newly commissioned Dolphin Golf Club House, saying the facility would serve not only recreational purposes but also strengthen professional interaction, camaraderie and engagement among serving personnel, veterans and partners of the Navy.
According to him, the project represents a strategic investment in social infrastructure that would support broader institutional activities for years to come.
The Naval Chief, however, urged personnel to imbibe a strong maintenance culture, stressing that the value of infrastructure lies in proper utilisation and preservation.
He charged beneficiaries and custodians of the facilities to take ownership of the investments and ensure they are maintained to the highest standards.
“Every accommodation block, recreational facility and supporting infrastructure entrusted to our care must be maintained to the highest standards,” he said, while also cautioning against wasteful electricity consumption.
Abbas further expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his support towards the growth and modernisation of the Nigerian Navy.
He also commended project teams, contractors, engineers and workers whose efforts ensured the successful completion of the projects.
The CNS expressed confidence that the facilities would significantly contribute to personnel welfare, institutional development and the operational effectiveness of the Nigerian Navy.
