FG Okays N111bn to Begin Akwanga-Jos-Gombe-Maiduguri Superhighway
The Federal Government has flagged off Section 1, Phase 1 of the Akwanga-Jos-Bauchi-Gombe-Biu-Maiduguri Superhighway, a 125-kilometre construction project between Akwanga and Jos.
Speaking at the flag off ceremony in Akwanga, Nasarawa State, on Wednesday, the Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, described the project as a strategic intervention to modernise one of Nigeria’s most important inland corridors.
According to him, the superhighway spans 700 kilometres across five states, linking communities, markets, agricultural zones, and security passages.
Umahi explained that the construction will adopt Continuously Reinforced Concrete Pavement (CRCP) technology, a modern engineering system designed to deliver durability, resilience, and cost-effectiveness.
“This innovative pavement system reflects our commitment to building infrastructure that offers superior performance, reduced maintenance, and extended service life, ensuring greater value for public funds,” he said.
The project will feature a 12-metre-wide carriageway reinforced with high-tensile steel, alongside comprehensive drainage, bridges, street lighting, traffic safety facilities, and other ancillary works to meet international standards.
Highlighting the phased implementation, Umahi noted that Section 2 of the superhighway has already been flagged off, while procurement is underway for Section 1, Phase 2.
He stressed that the government’s systematic approach demonstrates its determination to fully develop the corridor.

Speaking further, the Minister said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved ₦111 billion for immediate release to fund the project.
“President Tinubu is not just building roads, he is building opportunity, unity, and renewed hope for generations to come,” he added.
On his part, President Tinubu stressed that this project is part of his administration’s four Legacy Road Projects designed to connect Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones.
Tinubu who was represented by the National Chairman of All Progressives Congress (APC), Nentawe Yilwatda, described the superhighway as “a defining milestone that will reshape Nigeria’s transport ecosystem, connect communities, and unlock economic opportunities.”
“The reinforced concrete technology of President Tinubu is quite innovative. It ensures greater value for public funds and will end the cycle of failed asphalt roads,” he said.
Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State commended the Federal Government’s reforms, noting that increased monthly allocations from ₦3.5–4 billion to ₦13–15 billion have enabled states to deliver projects without borrowing.
“This road takes care of security, economic development, and connects borders. It is a gesture our people will never forget,” he said.
Engr. Zhong Xiang, Managing Director of CGC Nigeria Limited, the project contractor, pledged to deliver the project to the highest standards.
“This strategic corridor will connect Nigeria’s North-Central and North-East, improve mobility, facilitate trade, and unlock new opportunities for millions of Nigerians. Together, we are not just building a road, we are building prosperity and a brighter future,” he stated.
