The Nigerian Prison Service has registered 22 inmates of Jos Prison’s Adult School for the 2017 Basic Literacy Examination.
The examination which will commence on the 24th August, 2017 is part of the regime programs organized by the Service to provide quality education to inmates leading to a more favourable environment for the de-radicalization, reformation, rehabilitation, and the eventual reintegration of the inmates in to the society.
The Basic Literacy programme is a nine (9) month course organized for illiterate adult and out of school youths in Prison custody supervised by the Directorate of Adults and Non-formal Education of the Plateau State Universal Basic Education Board. The programme will produce a more literate inmate population that are self-reliant through skill acquisition and functional literacy.
It is pertinent to re-establish the Service resolve to employ modern tool of penal administration and security management where education is core to achieving public safety. The Service assures you of her commitment towards improving the general conditions of inmates in custody through the provision of quality education, humane treatment of inmates in accordance with the best modern practices of treatment of offenders and the advancement of inmates’ rights within and outside our attention facilities.
The Service therefore call on State Governments, NGOs, CBOs, religious bodies, corporate organizations and well meaning Nigerians to invest in public safety through custodial education.
