Aisha Buhari Urges Increase Education of Girl Child, Women in Africa
Wife of the President Mrs. Aisha Buhari has emphasized the need to increase level of education among both the girl child and women in Africa. She said “ We all have a role in addressing falling rolls, especially among school aged girls, whether due to cultural reasons or as a result of poverty” she made this call at a Side Event at the Sixty Second United Nations Commission on the Status of Women, held recently at the United Nations Headquarters, New York.
Mrs. Buhari further stated that empowerment of women is better, easier and faster achieved when the woman is educated. Mrs. Aisha Buhari was represented by Senior Special Assistant to the President Dr. Hajo Sani, who highlighted the effort of Future Assured Programme a pet project of Her Excellency in assisting women and children.
Also at the Side Event, Minister for Women Affairs Mrs. Aisha Jummai Alhassan called for more advocacy and awareness creation among women at all levels to resist any form of gender based violence.
Speaking further, the Minister said the Side Event is meant to highlight Nigerian Government intervention on education and skills acquisition and address the factors encouraging early marriage, achieving gender equality and the empowerment of rural women and girls.
Member, House of Representative Committee on Women affairs Hon. Stella Ngwu stated the importance of educating our women and empowering them to make them self-reliance. She said education is a basic human right and therefore should be a priority to all Governments. She noted that providing girls with basic education is an assurance of giving them greater Independence and empowerment.
In a related development, a movie on Human Trafficking produced by Dr. Queen Blessing Itua, Executive Director, Global Empowerment Movement,  was screened at an evening event. Mrs. Buhari, who was the Special Guest of Honor was represented by Dr. Hajo Sani.
