Fact-check: Did “EndBadGovernance” Protesters Surround Buhari’s Daura House?

A viral image making the rounds online and across various social media platforms claiming that “EndBadGovernance” protesters have surrounded former President Muhammadu Buhari’s home in Daura, Katsina State.

The text accompanying the image reads in parts:

“Finally, one of the two main culprits of Nigerian misery, Buhari’ house in Daura is being surrounded by protestors.”

Muhammadu Buhari, a Nigerian statesman and former president (2015-2023), has been the subject of public criticism, with many blaming his administration for the current economic hardship in Nigeria.

Facebook users have shared varying opinions, with some commenting, “Buhari was the genesis of this hardship in Nigeria,” while others defended him, saying, “Buhari did well, and Tinubu is continuing his good legacy.”

Meanwhile, PRNigeria fact-checkers investigated the claim using keyword searches and found that Daily Trust Newspapers first reported the news on Thursday.

The report, captioned “BREAKING: Tension In Daura As Protesters Troop To Buhari’s Residence, Emir’s Palace,” states that angry protesters gathered at Buhari’s residence on Thursday, joining the nationwide #EndBadGovernance demonstration.

Further inquest revealed that other online news sources, including an online TV with the caption, “”Protesters storm Buhari’s home in Daura, Katsina…” and a popular blogger, also reported the same incident with the headline, “Angry protesters trooped to the residence of ex-President Muhammadu Buhari in Daura….”

The post generated 2,366 likes and 257 comments at the early hours of Thursday on  the page.

However, attempts to reach Buhari’s spokesperson were unsuccessful.

After a thorough investigation, PRNigeria fact-check team confirmed that the claim about #EndBadGovernance protesters surrounding Buhari’s home in Daura, Katsina State, is true.
