Fact-check: Did Protesters Storm Sultan of Sokoto’s Palace Demanding for Obi or Change of Govt?

A viral video is circulating online and on social media platforms, particularly WhatsApp and Facebook, claiming that protesters stormed the Sultan of Sokoto’s palace demanding a change of government when a delegation of Federal government visited the state

The accompanying text reads in part: ‘Sokoto today! Protesters marched to the Sultan’s palace, chanting “No to Tinubu… Obi or the military take over.”

Meanwhile, PRNigeria‘s fact-check team has traced the origins of the claims, which started on social media platforms like Facebook, after the Defence Minister of State, Bello Matawalle led the security chiefs to Sokoto to supervise the military response to the escalating security challenges in the North-west region.

However, Further investigation revealed that the trending claims were actually on an old video during the ‘EndBadGovernance’ protests, which occurred in August , 2024 – approximately a month ago as reported here

The #EndBadGovernance protests, also known as the #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria movement, comprised a series of decentralized mass demonstrations that took place across Nigeria from August 1 to August 10, 2024. These protests were sparked by the escalating cost of living in the country, which had become unsustainable for many citizens.

Conclusion

Fact-checking by PRNigeria has revealed that the viral video purportedly showing protesters at the Sultan of Sokoto’s palace during the visit of the Defence Minister and Service Chiefs is actually an old video from the EndBadGovernance protests held in August 2024.

Therefore, PRNigeria concludes that the claim that protesters stormed the Sultan of Sokoto’s palace demanding support for Peter Obi or a change of government is misleading.
