Men of the Nigerian Police have invaded and occupied the headquarters of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) in Abuja on Satuday’s night in an attempt to break the ongoing nationwide strike embarked upon by the emergency workers.
The invasion of the NEMA’s building came after the agency’s boss Mustafha Maihaja returned to Nigeria from Moscow and Paris on a foreign trip.
A staff union leader told the NewsDigest that Maihaja is an incompetent and  inexperienced administrator who does not have any skill to manage  staff and the operations in the agency.
The union leader said: “The Current DG NEMA, Maihaja has refused to implement all the agreements he signed with labour union at the Office of Minister of Labour and Productivity. He has also failed to respect the office of the Vice President Osinbajo who had iuntervened to ensure that there is harmony and peaceful resolution of the crisis.
“Maihaja has only succeeded in grounding all the major tools of operation in NEMA. For instance, the Emergency Aircraft that cost the Federal Republic Of Nigeria $100b tax payers money has been grounded by Maihaja. He flew the Aircraft twice and refused to renew its insurance after the expiration.
“The Emergency Response Ambulance Bays which responded to over 1000 incidences just within Abuja between 2015 and 2016  are also grounded by Maihaja.
“As it is now, the Agency cannot respond to emergencies anywhere in Nigeria because the call centre emergency response vehicles are also grounded.
“Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) are left to their fate as the Agency is not in any way providing necessary relief matrials, while most of the items are decaying in the respective warehouses.
“Our staff have become redundant with no working materials, equipment or tools for addressing any emergency situation. And yet Maihaja derives joy in intimidating the staff and threatening to sack them through childish corruption allegation against innocent staff.”
