Presidential Committee Frees 135 Prison Inmates in Kebbi
In its quest to oversee the implementations of Federal Executive Council’s directives on fast-tracking Decongestion of Prisons Nationwide.

The National Stakeholders Committee on Prison Reform and Decongestion has on Monday discharged 135 inmates during the Committee’s tour of Prisons in Kebbi State. 133 Inmates convicted of minor offences with the option of a fine and could not pay the fines have had their fines settled by the Federal Government through the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr.Abubakar Malami SAN, and some had their fines paid by State Governor, Senator. Abubakar Atiku Bagudu. While 2 Inmates were released on health ground and 1 female convict freed on special ground.

The Minister who earlier announced the FG’s N500,000 grant to settled fines, urged Prison Officers to treat Inmates with dignity and respect. Chairman of the Committee Chief Judge of Federal Capital Territory,High Court, Justice Ishaq Bello, cautioned the elated Inmates to shun all forms of crime.

Controller of Prisons in charge Kebbi State Command,CP. Sani Adamu Potiskum, expressed his sincere gratitude to the Committee. Noting that Decongestion of Prisons will go a long way in addressing contemporary challenges militating the Service. He added that the exercise will help reduce overcrowding, ease classification of offenders based on crime committed and also make reformation impacful.

On hand to witness the event include Delegates from National Prisons Headquarters, led by Assistant Controller General of Prisons in charge Operations, Mr Abubakar Garba, state chief judge, state attorney general,members of the press and a host of Prisons Officials.

Highlight of the tour is a courtesy call made to Emir of Gwandu, Alhaji.Iliyasu Muhammadu Bashar,chairman of Kebbi state council of chiefs.
