BUK’s 39th Convocation: 176 Students Earn First-Class Degrees, 275 PhDs

BUK’s 39th Convocation: 176 Students Earn First-Class Degrees, 275 PhDs

The Vice-Chancellor of Bayero University Kano (BUK), Professor Sagir Adamu Abbas, has announced that 4,402 students will be awarded degrees, diplomas, and certificates during the university’s 39th convocation ceremony, which begins on Wednesday.

According to PRNigeria, a total of 176 students will graduate with First-Class honours, while 275 will receive PhDs. Additionally, 2,590 students will be awarded master’s degrees, and 535 will earn postgraduate diplomas.

Convocation Preparations and Schedule

Speaking at a pre-convocation press briefing on Monday, Professor Abbas highlighted the university’s preparations for the upcoming event.

> “I welcome you all to this press briefing as we prepare for the 39th Convocation Ceremony of Bayero University Kano. This event marks a significant milestone in the academic journey of our students, and we are excited to celebrate their achievements. As you are aware, BUK holds its convocation in stages, and this year’s ceremony will span four days.”

Providing a breakdown of the convocation schedule, the Vice-Chancellor outlined the following:

Day One – Wednesday, February 12, 2025: A total of 4,200 graduates from 11 faculties will receive their degrees, diplomas, and certificates.

Day Two – Thursday, February 13, 2025: Another 4,367 graduates from seven faculties will be conferred with degrees.

Day Three – Friday, February 14, 2025: The Convocation Lecture will be delivered by Khalil Suleiman Halilu, Executive Vice Chairman and CEO of NASENI, on the topic “Innovation and Entrepreneurship: A Pathway to National Development.” The session will be chaired by Chief Uche Geoffrey Nnadi, Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology.

Day Four – Final Day: The university will confer honorary degrees on two distinguished Nigerians: Colonel Sani Bello (Retired), a former military governor, and Alhaji Auwalu Abdullahi Rano, popularly known as AA Rano. Additionally, three eminent retired professors—Professor Garba Dahuwa Azare, Professor Julius Afolabi Falola, and Professor Musa Mohammed Borodo—will be awarded the prestigious title of Emeritus Professor.

Breakdown of Degrees to Be Awarded

Professor Abbas provided a detailed summary of the degrees and diplomas to be conferred:

First-Class Degrees: 176

PhDs: 275

Master’s Degrees: 2,590

Postgraduate Diplomas: 535

Appreciation and Invitation

The Vice-Chancellor expressed gratitude for the continued support of staff, stakeholders, and the academic community. He extended an open invitation to the public to join the university in celebrating the remarkable achievements of its students and honorees.

The 39th Convocation of Bayero University Kano is set to be a historic event, recognizing academic excellence and the contributions of distinguished personalities to national development.
