MAJOR SHAKE-UP: Bayo Ojulari Sacks Over 200 NNPCL Officials, Staff

A sweeping restructuring led by newly appointed Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC), Bayo Ojulari, has resulted in the dismissal or forced retirement of over 200 officials across various departments of the state-run oil giant.

Among the top casualties are Bala Wunti, former Group General Manager of the National Petroleum Investment Management Services (NAPIMS), Lawal Sade, the agency’s Chief Compliance Officer, and Ibrahim Onoja, Managing Director of the Port Harcourt Refinery.

Sources within the company told Peoples Gazette that the move—Ojulari’s first major action since assuming office on April 4—has been received with cautious optimism. Many staff members reportedly expressed support for the shake-up, viewing it as an opportunity to promote diversity and inject new energy into the organization.

“This restructuring will significantly open up leadership roles for women and other underrepresented groups within NNPC,” a senior official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said. “It’s a bold move aimed at realigning the company’s priorities with modern corporate governance.”

As part of the shake-up, Maryamu Idris has been appointed as the new Managing Director of Trading, replacing Lawal Sade. She is now tasked with overseeing all crude oil transactions. Additionally, Obioma Abangwu has been named Chief Liaison Officer to the NNPC Management Board.

Attempts to reach the NNPC’s Corporate Communications Department for official comments on the development were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.

Ojulari, a former top executive at Shell, was appointed by President Bola Tinubu earlier this month to replace Mele Kyari, who led the company for five years before his removal.
