Police Make U-turn, Reactivate Digital Tinted Glass Permit System

…As IGP Moves to Curb Harassment, Bolster National Security

The Nigeria Police Force has officially reactivated the issuance of digital Tinted Glass Permits (TGP) nationwide, following a directive from the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun.

The development marks a return to structured regulation after years of confusion and rising complaints over the arbitrary harassment of motorists with factory-fitted tinted windows.

In a press statement on Tuesday, signed by ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi ,the force spokesman, said, the renewed system aims to strike a balance between the legitimate use of tinted vehicle glass and the need to ensure national security.

The initiative will now be managed through a streamlined, user-friendly online platform  — which is designed to enhance transparency, accountability, and efficiency.

The decision comes amid increasing concern over the abuse of tinted vehicles for criminal purposes such as kidnapping, armed robbery, and “one-chance” scams. According to the police, such vehicles often hinder law enforcement visibility and provide cover for criminal elements.

“The reactivation of the permit system is a strategic move to identify lawful users such as individuals with medical needs or security personnel while preventing its misuse for criminal activities,” the statement read.

Applicants are now required to complete the permit process online, which includes identity verification through their National Identification Number (NIN) and Tax Identification Number (TIN), biometric data capture, and background checks. Permits will be issued with QR codes and are expected to be processed within 72 hours.

To ensure a smooth transition, the Force has announced a 30-day grace period beginning May 1st, 2025. Enforcement will commence at the expiration of this period, and police officers found engaging in extortion or harassment under the guise of enforcement will face disciplinary action.

Reiterating the Police Force’s commitment to citizen-focused and technology-driven policing, IGP Egbetokun urged Nigerians to embrace the new system, describing it as a step toward safer roads and improved public confidence in law enforcement.

“This initiative is not just about regulation — it is about restoring trust, enhancing our investigative capacity, and reinforcing our collective security,” the IGP said.

The Force emphasized that this reform underscores its readiness to align with modern policing practices and the evolving needs of citizens in a digital age.
