Akwa Ibom Marine Police Foil Sea Pirate Attack, Recover Boat and Stolen Items
Operatives of the Akwa Ibom State Marine Police successfully repelled a sea pirate attack along the Oron-Calabar waterways on Saturday, May 10, 2025, recovering a speedboat and various stolen items from the assailants.
The incident occurred around 12:06 p.m. while the Marine Police were conducting search and rescue operations in the area. Acting on a distress call about an ongoing attack by approximately seven pirates in a speedboat, the Officer-in-Charge swiftly mobilized his team to respond.
According to a statement by the State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, the pirates, on sighting the approaching police patrol boats, opened fire sporadically. The Marine Police operatives returned fire, forcing the attackers to flee into a shallow creek inaccessible to police boats.

Determined to apprehend the criminals, the police proceeded to raid the pirates’ hideout, where a cache of items was recovered. Among the items seized were:
One W23 speedboat fitted with a 200HP Yamaha engine gearbox
One 15HP Yamaha engine
Various dismantled engine parts
One Dane gun
One improvised toolbox
One Emage petrol generator
One OX standing fan
A rubber container suspected to contain charms
One white candle
One black wallet with a WAEC ID card bearing the name ‘Patrick Edet Effiong’
Two recent passport photographs
One brown handbag with assorted tablets
Two rounds of K2 live ammunition and two empty shells
Personal items including a wristwatch, marker, perfume, black thread with needle, and body cream
DSP Timfon John noted that efforts are ongoing to track down and arrest the fleeing suspects.
The Akwa Ibom State Police Command reiterated its commitment to ensuring the safety and security of waterways and warned criminal elements to desist from acts of piracy and other maritime crimes.
