DHQ Debunks Viral Video Allegedly Showing Terrorist Attack on Borno Military Base

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has strongly refuted a viral video circulating on social media which falsely claims to depict terrorists attacking and overrunning a military base in Marte, Borno State.

In a statement issued Thursday night, the Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Markus Kangye, described the footage as a deliberate disinformation campaign. He explained that forensic analysis of the video revealed it to be an old clip originally posted online on December 7, 2020, from a different location entirely unrelated to the Marte incident.

“The attention of the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) has been drawn to a video currently circulating on social media, falsely presented as footage from the recent attack on troops in Marte, Borno State,” the statement read. “Following a thorough analysis by relevant authorities, it has been confirmed that the video is not related to the Marte incident in any form.”

General Kangye clarified that the video’s visual content, terrain, and operational context do not correspond to the current operational environment in Marte, and warned that the clip was being deliberately recycled by terrorist sympathisers and criminal elements to spread fear and undermine military progress.

He confirmed that there was indeed a terrorist attack on troops in Marte on Monday, May 12, 2025, around 3:00 a.m., but emphasized that the assault was successfully repelled. “Our troops responded with bravery and firepower, neutralizing a large number of terrorists while others fled with gunshot wounds,” he said.

The Defence Headquarters condemned the spread of false information, calling it a malicious effort to demoralize troops and mislead the public. “This act of misinformation is not only malicious but a failed attempt to demoralize our gallant troops and undermine the confidence of Nigerians in the Armed Forces,” the DHQ noted.

The DHQ reiterated the Armed Forces’ commitment to defending the nation’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, stressing that troops across all theatres are making steady gains against insurgents.

Nigerians were urged to disregard the fake video and rely on verified information from official military sources. “The support and cooperation of all Nigerians remain vital in the collective fight against terrorism and all forms of insecurity,” the statement concluded.
