Disregard US Embassy Security Advisory, Abuja Safe and Secure – FG Assures Citizens
The Federal Government has assured citizens and the international community that Abuja remains safe, dismissing a recent security advisory issued by the United States Embassy which restricts staff and their families from non-official travel to military installations and government facilities within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
In a statement issued on Monday, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, affirmed that the government recognizes the right of foreign missions—including the U.S. Embassy—to advise their citizens. However, he stressed that such advisories do not reflect the current security reality in Abuja.
“Nigeria’s security agencies are operating proactively, working tirelessly to ensure the safety and protection of all residents in the FCT and throughout the country,” the Minister said.

“Abuja’s security architecture has recorded remarkable successes in detecting, deterring, and neutralising potential threats. There is no imminent or specific threat that justifies the level of concern implied in the U.S. advisory.”
Minister Idris explained that the advisory seems to be informed by general global security developments rather than concrete intelligence regarding threats within Nigeria’s capital.
“We urge diplomatic missions, investors, development partners, and the general public to remain calm. Abuja continues to be one of the safest capital cities in the world,” the Minister added.
He reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment to the security and well-being of all who live in or visit the FCT.
“Our security and intelligence agencies are vigilant and fully prepared to respond swiftly and effectively to any potential threat. We encourage citizens to go about their lawful activities without fear, while remaining security conscious and reporting any suspicious activities to the appropriate authorities,” he concluded.
