Nigerian Army Probes Viral Troop Feeding Video, Reaffirms Commitment to Soldiers’ Welfare

The Nigerian Army has launched a full-scale investigation into a viral video showing some personnel expressing dissatisfaction with the food items allegedly supplied to them by military authorities.

In a press statement released on Wednesday, the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Lieutenant Colonel Appolonia Anele, said the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, has directed that a “thorough and detailed” inquiry be conducted to ascertain the authenticity and circumstances surrounding the video.

While acknowledging that the context and credibility of the footage were yet to be fully verified, Anele emphasized that the matter is being handled with “the seriousness it deserves.”

“The Nigerian Army wishes to assure the general public and all personnel that the issue is receiving due attention. The COAS has ordered an investigation and has also pledged that the outcome will be made public upon conclusion,” she said.

Reaffirming General Oluyede’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and the welfare of personnel, Anele noted that the welfare of troops remains the Army Chief’s top priority, in line with his leadership philosophy.

“He remains committed to consolidating the transformation of the Nigerian Army towards bequeathing a well-motivated and combat-ready force that can effectively discharge its constitutional responsibilities within a joint and multi-agency environment,” she stated.

The statement also highlighted the recently launched “Soldier First” initiative, a concept that places the well-being, dignity, and operational readiness of soldiers—and their families—at the core of all Army policies and actions.

Anele, however, warned against using unauthorized platforms to express grievances, particularly on operational matters, describing such actions as a breach of military ethics and discipline.

“The Army encourages personnel to utilize established military channels to communicate their complaints or concerns, especially on welfare issues,” she said.

The Nigerian Army reiterated its commitment to maintaining the highest standards of leadership accountability, institutional integrity, and the continued well-being of its troops as it works to fulfill its constitutional mandate.
