Army Troops, DSS Nab Arms Trafficker in Taraba, Recover Ammunition, Cash

In a joint security operation, troops of the Nigerian Army’s 6 Brigade and operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) have arrested a suspected gunrunner in Wukari, Taraba State, recovering hundreds of rounds of ammunition and over ₦842,000 in cash.

The suspect, identified as Bulyami Shuaib, 29, was intercepted around Ambassador Roundabout in Wukari Local Government Area. He is said to hail from Belango village in Karim Lamido LGA and is believed to be a key figure in an arms trafficking network operating within the region.

In a statement on Wednesday, Lieutenant Umar Muhammad, Acting Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, said the operation, carried out by personnel of 6 Brigade/Sector 3 of Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS) and DSS, was based on actionable intelligence.

Items recovered from the suspects were 362 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition; One round of 7.62mm NATO ammunition; and ₦842,100 in cash

“The suspect is currently in custody and has been cooperating with security agencies, offering useful information to aid further investigations and ongoing operations,” the army spokesman said.

Reacting to the arrest, Brigadier General Kingsley Chidiebere Uwa, Commander of 6 Brigade/Sector 3 OPWS, commended the troops and DSS operatives for what he described as a well-coordinated and timely operation. He reaffirmed the Nigerian Army’s commitment to working with sister agencies to rid Taraba and its environs of armed criminal networks.

General Uwa also appealed to members of the public to support ongoing security operations by providing credible and timely information that could lead to more arrests and disrupt criminal supply chains.

The operation is the latest in a series of joint efforts by security agencies aimed at curbing the proliferation of illegal arms in the North-Central region.
