BREAKING: ASUU Declares Two-Week Warning Strike

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has declared a two-week total and comprehensive warning strike across all public universities in Nigeria.

The National President of ASUU, Prof. Chris Piwuna, announced the industrial action during a press briefing held on Sunday at the University of Abuja.

“Compatriots of the press, it goes without saying that there is nothing sufficient on ground to stop the implementation of ASUU-NEC’s resolution to embark on a two-week warning strike at the expiry of the 14-day notice given on September 28, 2025,” Piwuna stated.

He directed all branches of the union to withdraw their services from midnight on Monday, October 13, 2025, stressing that the strike would be “total and comprehensive” as resolved at ASUU’s last National Executive Council (NEC) meeting.

The latest face-off between ASUU and the Federal Government comes amid ongoing negotiations aimed at averting another disruption in the nation’s tertiary education sector.

Last Wednesday, the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, told reporters in Abuja that the government had entered the final stage of discussions with ASUU and other university-based unions over outstanding issues, including staff welfare, university funding, and the implementation of the 2009 ASUU-FGN Agreement.

Alausa noted that the administration of President Bola Tinubu had made notable progress, including the release of ₦50 billion for the payment of Earned Academic Allowances (EAA) and the inclusion of another ₦150 billion in the 2025 budget for needs assessment, to be disbursed in three tranches.
