The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), in collaboration with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB), has launched a two-day training workshop under the Commonwealth Africa Region Anti-Corruption Research Project.

The initiative, being implemented at the ICPC headquarters in Abuja, seeks to identify corruption typologies and emerging trends across Commonwealth African countries, strengthen data-driven anti-corruption strategies, and promote inter-agency collaboration within the region.

Speaking at the opening session, ICPC Chairman, Dr. Musa Adamu Aliyu, SAN, who was represented by the Commission’s Director of Operations, Mr. Shehu Yahaya, underscored the importance of evidence-based research in tackling corruption.

“Corruption is not a singular act; it is a complex ecosystem of behaviours, incentives, and vulnerabilities. It manifests differently across institutions, sectors, and societies,” Dr. Aliyu noted. “Understanding these typologies is essential for designing targeted, effective, and sustainable anti-corruption strategies.”

He explained that the study, initiated by the Commonwealth Africa Anti-Corruption Centre (CAACC), aims to deepen understanding of corruption dynamics while fostering the exchange of best practices among anti-corruption bodies.

According to Dr. Aliyu, the project represents a major step toward strengthening Nigeria’s anti-corruption architecture through research, prevention, and policy reform — in line with ICPC’s mandate beyond investigation and prosecution.

“The CAACC considers it necessary that major anti-corruption agencies in Nigeria and other Commonwealth African countries collaborate to conduct this study,” he said. “The findings will inform policy, uncover patterns, reveal truths, and shape the future of governance in Nigeria and Africa at large.”

The ICPC boss urged participants to take full advantage of the training to enhance their technical and analytical capacity, as well as reinforce their ethical commitment to integrity.

The workshop, which brings together officers from the ICPC, EFCC, CCB, and other relevant stakeholders, is expected to produce innovative research frameworks that will advance the fight against corruption both in Nigeria and across the Commonwealth Africa region.
