FRSC Arrests Over 27,000 Drivers for Traffic Violations in Three Months

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Command has disclosed that it arrested over 27,000 drivers for various traffic offences between July and September 2025.

Sector Commander Mr. Felix Theman made this known on Thursday during the 2025 Ember Months Town Hall Meeting held in Abuja, themed “Take Responsibility for Your Safety: Stop Distracted Driving.”

Theman described the theme as both timely and compelling, noting that it underscores the fact that road safety is not only a shared responsibility but also a personal duty for every road user.

“Since I came on board five months ago, we have evaluated crash trends within the city, identified the major causes, and taken decisive steps to address them,” he said.

According to him, the command has intensified enforcement against overloading, driving against traffic, use of mobile phones while driving, running traffic lights, and other dangerous behaviours that threaten lives on the road.

“In the last quarter alone—between July and September—we arrested over 27,000 drivers for various violations. The majority of these offences revolve around the key issues I mentioned earlier,” Theman stated.

He stressed that while enforcement remains crucial, advocacy and public enlightenment are equally important to achieving safer road use.

“We have continued to engage relevant stakeholders, including transport unions, to promote a culture of safety and compliance. Ensuring safety on our roads requires collective effort,” he added.

Theman urged transport unions and fleet operators to prioritise regular driver training, strict supervision, and full adherence to safety standards.

He further appealed for public cooperation, saying, “Despite the progress recorded, there is still room for improvement. We must collectively take responsibility to make our roads safer through advocacy and open discussions like today’s meeting.”

Meanwhile, the FCT Command recently intensified enforcement against overloading in commercial vehicles. Between October 2 and 4, over 250 commercial drivers were arrested for violating the directive restricting taxis to only one passenger in the front seat, in line with vehicle design and safety specifications.

Theman explained that the latest operation forms part of the corps’ broader strategy to curb reckless driving, reduce road crashes, and ensure compliance with established safety regulations as vehicular movements peak towards the year’s end.
