Army Probes Death of Soldier Attacked by Mentally Unstable Man in Lagos
The 81 Division of the Nigerian Army has confirmed the death of a soldier who was fatally attacked by a mentally unstable individual while on internal security duty in the Imota area of Ikorodu, Lagos State.
The incident, which occurred on 16 November 2025 at about 4:00 p.m., followed an attempt by the soldier to de-escalate a chaotic situation in the area. According to preliminary information released by the Division, the soldier was unexpectedly struck on the head with a heavy log by the assailant, resulting in severe injuries.

Troops on duty with the fallen soldier immediately intervened, neutralizing the attacker and recovering the soldier’s weapon. The injured soldier was rushed to Ikorodu General Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival. He has since been buried according to Islamic rites, with the Acting Commanding Officer and other officers of his unit in attendance.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations, Lieutenant Colonel Musa Yahaya, said the Division has condoled with the family, friends, and colleagues of the deceased. He prayed for the repose of the soldier’s soul and acknowledged his service and sacrifice to the nation.
The Army also announced that an investigation has been instituted to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
The 81 Division further urged members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious activities to security agencies. It also appealed for responsible media reporting to avoid speculation as the investigation continues.
