Nigeria Has Lost a Moral Compass – Tinubu Mourns Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the death of renowned Islamic scholar and leader of the Tijjaniyya Muslim Brotherhood, Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi, who passed away on Thursday at the age of 101.

In a condolence message released on Wednesday, the President described the late cleric as a towering spiritual figure, a teacher, and a moral compass whose life-long devotion to preaching, scholarship, and peaceful coexistence profoundly shaped millions of followers across Nigeria and beyond.

Tinubu recalled his personal encounters with the revered scholar, noting the blessings and moral support the Sheikh extended to him during the period leading up to the 2023 presidential election. He said the cleric’s passing leaves a significant void within the Muslim community and the nation at large.

“Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi was a teacher, a father and a voice of moderation and reason,” the President said. “As both a preacher and a notable exegete of the Holy Quran, he was an advocate of peace and piety. His death has created a huge void.”

President Tinubu extended heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased, his students, and millions of adherents of the Tijjaniyya order, urging them to honour the late scholar’s legacy by upholding his teachings on peace, devotion to God and kindness towards humanity.

The statement was signed by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy.
