VP Shettima, Ribadu, Atiku Lead Dignitaries as Sheikh Dahiru Usman-Bauchi is Laid to Rest

Revered Islamic scholar and supreme leader of the Tijjaniya Sufi order in Nigeria, Sheikh Dahiru Usman-Bauchi, was laid to rest on Friday, a day after his passing, as thousands of mourners gathered to honour his legacy.

The funeral prayer, held at the Kofar Gombe Eid Prayer Ground around 5:00 p.m., was led by the Grand Imam of Nigeria, Sheikh Sheriff Sakeh. The solemn ceremony drew an impressive crowd of Muslim faithful, top government officials, traditional rulers, religious leaders, academics and admirers from across the country.

Vice President Kashim Shettima led the federal government delegation to the prayer session. Among other dignitaries in attendance were former Vice President Atiku Abubakar; Governors Abba Yusuf of Kano, Bala Mohammed of Bauchi and Mohammed Bago of Niger; National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu; Minister of Foreign Affairs Yusuf Tuggar; and the Ministers of Health and Information, Mohammed Ali-Pate and Mohammed Idris.

Other notable attendees included emirs, Islamic clerics, business leaders, captains of industry, and students, all paying tribute to the late scholar’s profound impact on generations of Muslims.

Following the prayer, Sheikh Usman-Bauchi’s remains were conveyed to his Bauchi residence, where he was buried at about 7:30 p.m. in line with Islamic traditions.

The distinguished Islamic figure died on Thursday at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBU-TH) in Bauchi.

Born in 1927 in Gombe, Sheikh Usman-Bauchi dedicated his life to advancing Islamic scholarship, promoting peaceful coexistence, and strengthening national unity. As the supreme leader of the Tijjaniya in Nigeria, his teachings—centred on moral discipline, tolerance, and devotion—earned him widespread reverence within and beyond the country.

Over the decades, he championed community development initiatives, mentored countless young scholars, and played a vital role in fostering religious understanding across diverse communities.

He is survived by numerous children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
