NPS Expends N563m Welfare of 1332 Prison Personnel

As part of its continues determination to assist staff in its Prisons Welfare Insurance Scheme (PWIS), the Controller General of Prisons (CGP), Ja’afaru Ahmed has said that a total of 1332 have been paid their PWIS beneficiaries for 2018.

Ja’afaru stated this while delivering a keynote address at the opening session of 13th Anniversary Workshop of PWIS held at Alexis Hotel and Conference Centre Jabi Abuja.

According to the Prison boss, 179 beneficiaries death claims amount to the tune of #153,083,080 have been paid. He also said that146 have benefitted from medical claims which amount to #26,168,008; while officers who sustained injury at the course of official duty and those on retirement claims were paid #384,342,582. He said, in all, a grand total number of 1332 beneficiaries have received #563,858,670 for the month January to December 2018.

The CGP further stated that this year’s work titled: “Skill Acquisition, Building Your Tomorrow today”, is designed to address the financial stability that sometimes accompanies retirement from service and also to add value to retirement life.

He thanked the Federal Government under the leadership of President Muhammadu Buhari GCFR for support; the Honourable Minister of Interior, (Rtd) Lt. Gen. Abdulrahman Bello Dambazau, CFR, PhD for his commitment and PWIS management in keeping in tune with its mandate of establishment.

Earlier, in his welcome address, the Secretary Board of Trustees PWIS, ACP. MA Salisu, attributed the successes recorded to the leadership style of the Controller General of Prisons. He said, ” I am not sure we can easily conclude a discourse on the achievements of PWIS without highlighting the invaluable inputs of our amiable CGP. Ja’afaru Ahmed”.

The pioneer chairman of the PWIS, (Retd) Acting CGP. OU Kalu was been recognised with a meritorious award for his contribution to humanitarian service and being the pioneer chairman of the scheme.

In his acceptance, Kalu thanked the Service for the honour. He went further to narrate how PWIS was established. “The story of PWIS was as a result of pathetic story of staff who die while in Service and funeral was delayed because there was no money to settle for hospital bill”. The pioneer chairman said.

Highlights of events at the opening session include presentation of awards to the CGP in recognition of his leadership style to PWIS, also award to the Pioneer Chairman, (Retd)Ag. CGP. OU Kalu, the PWIS Desk Officers and its Supporters which includes Mutual, NICON, Universal and Victory insurance. Also a Group Photographs with CGP and other dignitaries in attendance and Paper presentations for day one of the workshop. It is a 3-day workshop which continue on Thursday and will be closing on Friday 8th February 2019
