Titi Atiku allegedly called former President Obasanjo a “Monkey” for scuttling husband's Presidential aspiration

FACT-CHECK: Did Atiku’s Wife Call Obasanjo a “Monkey” for Scuttling Husband’s Presidential Aspiration?

‎Claim: A viral Facebook video appears to show a woman claiming to be Mrs. Amina Titi Atiku Abubakar, wife of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, verbally attacking former President Olusegun Obasanjo, allegedly calling him a “monkey” and accusing him of sabotaging her husband’s presidential ambition.

Background: ‎The video is shared with a sensational caption in Yoruba which reads: “Titi Abubakar Atiku blasts Baba Obasanjo… l’eyin aponle, abuku l’oku.”

‎Online posts frame the clip as a fresh outburst, with some reportorial translations alleging that Mrs. Abubakar referred to Obasanjo as a “monkey” and warned him to stop interfering in Atiku’s political aspirations.

‎This viral video has triggered heated debates online, especially within Yoruba-speaking audiences.

‎PRNigeria reports that Atiku Abubakar and Olusegun Obasanjo share a long and complex political history dating back to their joint administration between 1999 and 2007. Despite later political fallouts, public interactions between the Abubakar family and Obasanjo have, at various times, been cordial.

‎Notably, ahead of the 2023 general elections, Mrs. Titi Abubakar paid a courtesy visit to former President Obasanjo in Abeokuta, a gesture widely publicised and interpreted as a sign of respect and political reconciliation.

‎Against this backdrop, claims that she would publicly insult Obasanjo in harsh, culturally loaded language raised questions about authenticity.

‎Verification: To verify the claim, PRNigeria’s fact-check team conducted a detailed analysis using video verification tools, reverse image searches, and social media trend tracking.

‎Findings show that the video began trending on Facebook between January 21 and 22, 2026. The claim has gained much traction on Facebook. ‎But there is no evidence it was newly recorded.

‎Further investigation by PRNigeria fact-check team revealed that no credible mainstream media outlet has reported any recent statement by Mrs. Abubakar attacking or insulting Obasanjo.

‎Searches across various social media news platforms, X (formerly Twitter), and her official channels show zero verified reports linking her to the quoted remarks.

The clip is largely circulated on personal Facebook profiles and reels, often with laughing emojis and provocative captions, suggesting it is shared for controversy rather than factual reporting.

‎Technical review of the video shows uneven lip movement and audio mismatch, indicating possible AI-generated manipulation particularly voice overlay or post-production dubbing, which may not necessarily cast doubt on its authenticity.

‎Additional inquest shows that the woman featured in the viral video is not Mrs.Titi Atiku Abubakar, based on careful visual comparison with her verified public photographs and appearances.

‎Similarly, ‎Further checks showed clear physical differences: the woman in the viral video is noticeably darker and younger, while Mrs. Amina Titi Atiku Abubakar is well‑known to be fair‑skinned and older. This reinforces that the woman in the clip is not Atiku’s wife and the video was wrongly attributed to her.

Meanwhile, further checks indicate that the woman whose image was in the viral video is Hajiya Aisha Mai Rago, a political commentator who also speaks in Hausa and Yoruba

‎Conclusion: ‎PRNigeria’s investigation confirms that the viral video alleging that Mrs. Titi Abubakar insulted former President Olusegun Obasanjo is misleading. The footage is unrelated to any recent event, and there is no credible evidence that she made the purported remarks or attacked Obasanjo in the manner claimed.

PRNigeria’s inquiry also established that the individual whose image was manipulated in the video is not Titi Abubakar but a woman politician, popularly known as Hajia Aisha Mairago.

The sensational narrative attached to the clip was fabricated by social media users to provoke controversy and drive engagement.

‎Verdict: MISLEADING
