Police, NIPR Wage War Against Drug Abuse in Kano

The Police and Nigerian Institute of Public Relations have agreed to partner towards waging war against drug abuse in Kano.

The newly deployed Kano state commissioner of police Wakili Muhammad has said he is ready to sacrifice his life in the crusade against drugs abuse and would be glad to partner with professional bodies to support the campaign.

The Commissioner stated this when he received members of Kano state chapter of Nigeria Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) in his office.

The commissioner who described substance abuse as the major cause criminal activities in the state called for deliberate policies that could identify causes and solutions of the menace beyond arrest and detention.

“The war against drugs abuse is a responsibility of every member of the society towards eradicating the menace as it affects our scholars, academics, youths and women.

“The NIPR as an institute for campaign and information dissemination should also be in the forefront in the campaign to eradicate the cankerworm in our society,” the commissioner said.

The police boss said he would encourage staff in the press and information department to join NIPR as professional members.

In his address, the National council member of NIPR Sule Ya’u Sule said the visit was to register their solidarity to the commissioner in his effort of fighting drugs abuse in Kano state.

He said it is part of the responsibility of NIPR to support him in rebranding Kano which is being tagged as the centre of drugs abuse and political thuggery.

“Within short period of your arrival you demonstrated the commitment in fighting drugs abuse in Kano. We hope this will change the narrative of Kano being the centre of drugs abuse.

“We hope you will head the NDLEA. We would advocate for your appointment as head of NDLEA,” Mr Sule said.

Mr Sule appealed to the commissioner to encourage all policemen working in PR department to register with NIPR as the institute will soon constitute task force on fishing out non registered public relations practitioners in public and private organizations.

In his remarks, the Kano state chairman of NIPR Aminu Hamza lamented how Kano which used to be the centre of commerce and political emancipation now turned the centre of drugs.

He appealed to commissioner of police to look into how radio stations in Kano turned to platforms of airing inflammatory statements and hate speech.

The leadership of NIPR has presented enrolment forms into the institute to the commissioner for onward submission to policemen working in PR department.

Kano has been rated as the state with high rate of drugs abuse in Nigeria.
