Crescent Moon Sighted, Sultan Declares Wednesday, as First Day of Ramadan
The Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), His Eminence, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, has declared Wednesday, February 18, 2026, as the first day of Ramadan 1447AH.
The declaration followed the confirmation of the sighting of the new moon of Ramadan on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, corresponding to the 29th day of Sha’aban 1447AH.
In a press release issued on Tuesday by the Sultanate Council Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs in conjunction with the National Moon sighting Committee, reports were received from various moon sighting committees across the country confirming the sighting of the crescent.

Based on the verified reports, the Sultan accepted the recommendations and accordingly proclaimed Wednesday, February 18, 2026, as the commencement of the holy month of Ramadan for Muslims in Nigeria.
The statement, signed by the Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs, Prof. Sambo Wali Junaidu, who is also the Wazirin Sokoto, conveyed the Sultan’s felicitations to the Nigerian Muslim Ummah on the commencement of the sacred month.
His Eminence urged Muslims to dedicate the period to prayers for peace, unity, progress and development of the country. He also prayed that Allah (SWT) grants the faithful guidance and accepts their acts of worship during the holy month.
The Sultan wished all Muslims a spiritually rewarding Ramadan and prayed for Allah’s blessings upon the nation.
