
UK, Germany Defence Attachés Reaffirm Support for Nigeria’s Counter-Insurgency Efforts
The Defence Attachés of the United Kingdom and Germany to Nigeria have reaffirmed their countries’ commitment to sustained collaboration with the Nigerian Armed Forces in the fight against terrorism and insurgency in the North East.
The pledge was made on Wednesday during a historic visit by Brigadier Tom Harper of the United Kingdom and Colonel Boris Bovecamp of Germany to the Headquarters Theatre Command of Operation HADIN KAI in Maiduguri, Borno State.
Speaking during the visit, Brigadier Harper underscored the enduring relationship between Nigeria and the United Kingdom, rooted in mutual respect and shared values of democracy, rule of law and human rights. He commended the efforts of the Nigerian Armed Forces in confronting terrorism in the region, particularly through Operation HADIN KAI.
The British Defence Attaché further expressed his country’s readiness to deepen its support through enhanced training programmes facilitated by the British Military Advisory and Training Team (BMATT), aimed at strengthening the operational capacity of Nigerian troops.

In his remarks, Colonel Bovecamp stated that his visit was to explore potential areas of future collaboration, especially in capacity building and regional cooperation frameworks. According to him, such partnerships would enhance operational effectiveness and foster stronger collaboration in the collective effort to defeat terrorism.
Responding, the Theatre Commander of Operation HADIN KAI, Major General Abdulsalam Abubakar, appreciated the continued support of both the United Kingdom and Germany in Nigeria’s counter-insurgency campaign. He noted that various training initiatives supported by the two countries have significantly improved the skills and proficiency of troops in addressing evolving security threats in the theatre.
The Theatre Commander also identified technical expertise, equipment provision and logistics support as key areas for future collaboration, describing the partnership as mutually beneficial.
The visit concluded with the signing of the visitors’ register, presentation of souvenirs and a group photograph, symbolising the strengthened ties between Nigeria and its international partners in the ongoing counter-terrorism campaign.
