Defence Minister: Intelligence-Led Operations Key to Crushing Terrorism
The Minister of Defence, Christopher Musa (retd), has underscored the importance of intelligence-driven operations in Nigeria’s fight against terrorism, banditry and other trans-border crimes.
Musa made this known on Wednesday while receiving a delegation from the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA), led by its Director-General, Matthew O. Adepoju, at the ministry’s headquarters in Abuja.
In a statement issued by the ministry’s Deputy Director of Information, Enderline Chukwu, the minister emphasised that proactive, intelligence-led strategies remain central to dismantling criminal networks and restoring security across the country.
He noted that satellite-enabled surveillance systems, radar imaging and signal analytics could significantly boost situational awareness, help track criminal routes and hideouts, and strengthen operational support for troops engaged in frontline missions.
According to Musa, the integration of advanced space-based technologies into military operations would enhance real-time intelligence gathering and improve the effectiveness of ongoing counter-terrorism efforts.

The minister reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to strengthening collaboration with NASRDA to deepen space-based support for national security operations. He also called for closer synergy between NASRDA and the Defence Space Administration to ensure seamless integration and optimal utilisation of national space assets.
Earlier, Adepoju highlighted Nigeria’s existing space infrastructure and its international partnerships, noting that President Bola Tinubu had approved the procurement process for additional satellites, including radar systems, to reinforce the country’s security architecture.
He disclosed that the agency had presented proposals focused on enhanced border surveillance and real-time intelligence support aimed at improving environmental awareness and operational efficiency.
Both parties resolved to harmonise their efforts, eliminate overlaps in mandates and establish a coordinated deployment framework to maximise the impact of technology-driven security operations.
The meeting was attended by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Richard Pheelangwa, and the Director of the Joint Services Department, Bosede Olaniyi.
Nigeria has intensified its counter-terrorism campaign in recent years through improved intelligence gathering, inter-agency cooperation and increased investment in technology-driven security solutions. The renewed partnership between the Federal Ministry of Defence and NASRDA signals the government’s continued commitment to leveraging innovation and strategic collaboration to strengthen the nation’s security architecture.
