Nigeria, Egypt Expand Military Partnership to Tackle Security Threat
The Nigerian Army and its Egyptian counterpart have moved to strengthen military training cooperation as part of efforts to address emerging security challenges confronting both nations.
The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, disclosed this on Thursday while receiving the Egyptian Defence Attaché to Nigeria, Colonel Mohammed Ibrahim, during a courtesy visit to the Army Headquarters in Abuja.
Shaibu said Nigeria maintains a longstanding and mutually beneficial military relationship with Egypt, noting that cooperation between the two armies has continued to provide valuable opportunities for advanced professional training and operational development.
According to the Army Chief, sustained collaboration through specialized courses, training exchanges and professional military education remains essential to preparing personnel to effectively respond to evolving and complex security threats.
He explained that several officers of the Nigerian Army had benefited from advanced military training programmes in Egypt over the years, adding that the experience had significantly enhanced the professional competence and operational readiness of the force.
Shaibu expressed the Nigerian Army’s readiness to further expand the training opportunities, noting that equipping personnel with modern skills and knowledge remains critical to confronting contemporary security challenges.

The Army Chief also highlighted the importance of strengthening institutional linkages between both militaries, particularly through greater collaboration at strategic-level training institutions, including participation in programmes at the Nigerian Army War College.
He noted that such engagements would deepen professional ties, facilitate knowledge exchange and enhance the collective capacity of both armies to address emerging threats.
Shaibu also invited the Egyptian Army to participate in the forthcoming Nigerian Army Day Celebration scheduled for July 2026, describing it as an opportunity to further consolidate bilateral military relations.
The Army Chief further stressed the need to explore additional areas of cooperation, especially in aviation development and operational support systems, which he said would improve operational readiness, technological innovation and overall mission effectiveness.
Earlier in his remarks, Ibrahim said his visit was aimed at reviewing the implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding signed between both militaries in 2024.
He revealed that significant progress had been made in the implementation of several aspects of the agreement, particularly in the area of training cooperation.
The Egyptian Defence Attaché added that preparations were ongoing for the next Military Committee Meeting scheduled to hold later this year in Cairo.
Ibrahim reaffirmed Egypt’s commitment to strengthening defence collaboration with Nigeria, particularly in the areas of advanced military training and intelligence sharing to effectively confront contemporary security threats affecting both countries.
