2027 Elections: Resign by March 31, Tinubu Orders Political Appointees Seeking Elective Office
President has directed all political appointees under his administration seeking elective offices in the 2027 general elections to resign on or before March 31, 2026.
The directive, according to a statement issued by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), is in line with Section 88(1) of the Electoral Act, 2026, as well as the timetable released by the (INEC) for party primaries.
The circular was signed by the SGF, , and released through the Permanent Secretary, General Services Office, Dr. Ibrahim Abubakar Kana. It mandates all affected officials to formally step down within the stipulated deadline if they intend to participate in party primaries or contest for any elective position.

Those affected by the directive include ministers, ministers of state, special advisers, senior special assistants, special assistants, and personal assistants to the president. Others are directors-general and chief executive officers of federal government parastatals, agencies, commissions, government-owned companies, as well as all other presidential political appointees.
The statement further noted that all resignation letters must be submitted through the Office of the SGF no later than the March 31 deadline.
President Tinubu said the decision is aimed at ensuring compliance with electoral laws, enhancing transparency in the political process, and guaranteeing a level playing field for all aspirants. He also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening democratic institutions and promoting credible electoral processes in the country.
The directive was conveyed in a statement signed by the Head of Information and Public Relations in the SGF’s office, Dewan Nengak Goshit.
