Army Probes Maiduguri Extra-Judicial Killing, Cites Possible Security Links
The Headquarters Theatre Command of Operation HADIN KAI has launched an investigation into allegations of the killing of a civilian, Abdulrahman Mustapha, by military personnel in Maiduguri, even as preliminary findings point to possible security concerns surrounding the incident.
The allegations, which surfaced on social media, claimed that the deceased—also known as Abchin—was shot by troops on March 22, 2026, at the Polo axis near the Federal High Court in Maiduguri while returning from a Sallah visit. The reports described the incident as an extrajudicial killing, raising concerns over alleged violations of constitutional rights, lack of transparency, and improper handling of the body. Calls have also been made for an independent investigation and compensation.
In response, the Theatre Command described the allegations as serious and confirmed that it had initiated appropriate procedures to ascertain the facts. It noted, however, that preliminary operational indicators suggest the incident may be more complex than initially portrayed.
According to the military, the incident occurred at about 11:40 p.m., and initial assessments indicate that troops may have encountered individuals suspected to be part of a Boko Haram or ISWAP reconnaissance team or a sleeper cell operating within the area.

The Command stated that available reports suggest the deceased allegedly attempted to snatch a soldier’s rifle—an action considered a direct threat to troop safety. It further disclosed that the individual was reportedly found with multiple identification cards bearing different names, including a foreign identification document from the Niger Republic, raising concerns about possible cross-border links or the use of false identities.
Additional items reportedly recovered from the individual include a bottle of Tutolin syrup and substances suspected to be cannabis. He was also said to be in the company of two unidentified women who fled the scene, prompting ongoing efforts by security forces to track and apprehend them.
Eyewitness accounts cited by the military indicated that the individual’s behaviour prior to the incident was suspicious and had triggered a distress call to a nearby military post.
The Theatre Command emphasised that these findings remain preliminary and subject to verification, stressing that they should not be interpreted as conclusive. It added that the ongoing investigation would examine the full sequence of events, including the conduct of troops and adherence to established Rules of Engagement.
“All relevant components have been directed to intensify efforts to identify and apprehend the fleeing individuals, as they may provide critical information,” the statement said.
The military assured the public that due process would be followed and that any outcomes from the investigation would be handled in line with applicable laws and military regulations.
Operation HADIN KAI reiterated its commitment to professionalism, accountability, and the protection of human rights, while continuing its mandate to maintain security and safeguard lives across the North-East.
