DHQ expresses optimism over US partnership, assures of adequate security during easter
The Defence Headquarters has expressed confidence that ongoing collaboration with the United States military will translate into measurable improvements in Nigeria’s security situation in the coming weeks and months.
The assurance comes amid continued insecurity in parts of the country despite the deployment of about 100 United States military personnel and equipment to Nigeria in February 2026.
The DHQ had earlier confirmed that the personnel arrived at the Bauchi Airfield on February 16, stressing that they were deployed strictly for technical assistance, training, and advisory roles in counter-terrorism operations, and not as combat troops.
Addressing journalists during the military’s end-of-month briefing in Abuja, the Director of Defence Media Operations, Micheal Onoja, said the support provided by the United States has been significant, particularly in intelligence sharing and training support to Nigerian forces.
He noted that the assistance, provided on favourable terms, is aimed at strengthening ongoing counter-threat operations across the country.

According to him, while the impact of the collaboration may not be immediately visible due to the nature of military operations, its effects will become more evident over time.
He explained that the intelligence support includes actionable information on the location and activities of hostile elements, which Nigerian forces are actively integrating into ongoing operations.
Onoja stated that military engagements typically require time before outcomes become apparent, adding that the current partnership is expected to enhance operational effectiveness in the medium term.
The Defence Headquarters further assured Nigerians of heightened security measures during the Easter festive period.
Onoja said troops had been placed on nationwide alert to prevent any security breaches, stressing that the armed forces remain fully committed to safeguarding lives and property during the holiday season.
He added that similar security postures were adopted during previous festive periods, including Christmas and Easter, and would continue as standard operational procedure.
According to him, security agencies are fully aware of the risks associated with festive periods, when criminal elements often attempt to exploit perceived lapses in vigilance.
He reaffirmed that the military will maintain heightened alertness throughout the period to ensure public safety and stability across the country.
