Plateau Crisis: Troops Intercept Armed Suspects, Repel Gunmen Attack
Troops of Joint Task Force, Operation Enduring Peace, on Friday intensified security operations across the Jos metropolis, arresting two suspects and recovering arms amid rising tension in Plateau State.
The military said the operation, which involved a stop-and-search exercise, was aimed at preventing further escalation of the crisis in Jos North and adjoining areas.
In a statement on Saturday, the Media Information Officer of the task force, Capt. Chinonso Oteh, said the troops recorded “immediate operational success” during the exercise.
He said, “Troops successfully intercepted and arrested two suspects as well as recovered one fabricated AK-47 rifle, four rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition, and one pump-action gun with a cutlass.”
Oteh explained that the arrests were made during targeted operations in flashpoints and major transit routes, including Dadinkowa, Old Airport Junction, Tudun Wada, and the state Low-cost Housing Estate.

He added that the intensified patrols formed part of a broader strategy to restore normalcy and safeguard lives and property in the state.
In a related development, the task force said troops responded to a distress call following reports of sporadic shooting at Yelwa Cattle Market in Shendam Local Government Area.
“On arrival, the unidentified gunmen fled into surrounding bushes under superior tactical pressure from troops,” Oteh said.
According to him, troops conducted a sweep of the area and discovered two residents who sustained gunshot wounds during the incident.
“The victims were immediately evacuated to a nearby medical facility for urgent treatment,” he added.
The military reiterated its commitment to sustaining operations across Plateau State until normalcy is fully restored.
“The command remains resolute in maintaining a dominant security presence. Operations will continue with increased vigour until the threat of violence is completely neutralised,” Oteh stated.
He urged residents to support ongoing efforts by providing credible information to security agencies.
