Nigerian Troops Complete Special Training Ahead of UN Peacekeeping Mission in Abyei
A contingent of Nigerian troops earmarked for deployment to the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) has successfully completed a nine-week pre-deployment training programme at the Martin Luther Agwai International Leadership and Peacekeeping Centre.
The graduation ceremony, held on April 8, 2026, at the Centre’s parade ground, marked the completion of training for Nigerian Contingent 4, comprising 18 officers and 168 soldiers.
Representing the Chief of Operations (Army), Major General Mayirenso Lander Saraso, the Director of Force Generation, Brigadier General Muhammed Kana, congratulated the troops and underscored the importance of professionalism, discipline, and adherence to global best practices in peacekeeping operations.
He reminded the personnel of the United Nations’ strict zero-tolerance policy on Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (SEA), urging them to conduct themselves as responsible ambassadors of Nigeria while on mission. He also commended the Centre’s leadership and training team for their commitment to preparing the troops for deployment.

Earlier, the Commandant of MLAILPKC, Major General Dagana Allu, described the event as a significant milestone in Nigeria’s longstanding contribution to international peace and security. He noted that the troops underwent rigorous and comprehensive training tailored to the complex operational environment in Abyei.
According to him, the Centre has, since its inception, trained over 100,000 peacekeepers who have served in various United Nations and regional missions. He added that the graduating troops were subjected to medical screening and trained in line with UN standards, covering key areas such as peacekeeping principles, rules of engagement, and professional conduct.
Allu further explained that the training included mission-specific drills and tactical exercises aimed at enhancing operational readiness. He expressed confidence that the contingent would sustain Nigeria’s reputation for professionalism and excellence in global peacekeeping efforts.
The Commandant also acknowledged the support of the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, citing his leadership as instrumental to the Centre’s continued success.
In a vote of thanks, the Deputy Commandant and Director of Studies, Brigadier General Gabriel Esho, appreciated the support from Army Headquarters, the Centre’s leadership, and the dedication of the training staff.
The troops are expected to be deployed to Abyei in continuation of Nigeria’s contribution to United Nations peacekeeping operations.
