NAF Launches Probe into Alleged Civilian Casualties from Jilli Market Airstrike
The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has initiated an investigation into reports of civilian casualties following a military airstrike on Jilli market, located along the Borno–Yobe border.
The incident occurred on Saturday during an operation targeting suspected fighters of Boko Haram. The market lies between Gubio Local Government Area in Borno State and Geidam Local Government Area in Yobe State.
In a statement issued on Sunday, NAF spokesperson Ehimen Ejodame said the service is treating the allegations with “utmost seriousness and empathy,” emphasizing that the protection of civilian lives remains central to its operations.
He disclosed that the Chief of the Air Staff has ordered the immediate deployment of the Civilian Harm Accident and Investigation Cell (CHAI-Cell) to conduct an on-site fact-finding mission.
“The Nigerian Air Force has taken note of reports alleging that an airstrike conducted on April 11, 2026, may have affected a local market in Jilli, resulting in civilian casualties,” the statement said.
“The Service treats all reports of possible civilian harm with the utmost seriousness and empathy. Accordingly, the CHAI-Cell has been activated to investigate the allegations.”

NAF reiterated its commitment to professionalism, accountability, and transparency, noting that it would collaborate with relevant authorities and community representatives to establish the facts. The public and media were urged to avoid speculation while the investigation is ongoing.
Despite the official position, multiple sources indicate that the strike resulted in significant civilian harm. Amnesty International, citing eyewitness accounts, alleged that three military jets bombed the market, killing more than 100 people.
The organization also reported that at least 35 individuals with severe injuries have been treated at Geidam General Hospital following the incident. Amnesty International criticized the deployment of air power in a civilian-populated area and questioned the legality of the operation.
Confirming the occurrence, Yobe State Police spokesperson Dungus Abdulkarim acknowledged that casualties were recorded at the market.
Meanwhile, the Yobe State Government maintained that the operation targeted a Boko Haram enclave in Borno State. Dahiru Abdulsalam, special adviser on security to the governor, stated that the strike was conducted by the air component of Operation Hadin Kai and was not intended to hit civilian targets.
