Military Exonerates Nigerien Previously Linked to Terrorism After Investigation
Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK) has clarified the status of an individual previously reported as a suspected terrorist, announcing that investigations have cleared him of any links to terrorist groups after comprehensive intelligence assessments.
The clarification follows media reports published on July 14, 2026, concerning an individual intercepted by troops of the 68 Battalion during an exploitation operation conducted after a terrorist attack at Cross Kauwa in Borno State.
In a statement issued on Thursday by the Acting Military Information Officer of Operation Hadin Kai, Captain Mohammed Goni, the military identified the individual as Aboubakar Muhammad Zein-Nur, also known as Houdairi.
According to the statement, the man was taken into custody in line with standard operational procedures due to the prevailing security situation in the Lake Chad region, where terrorist groups frequently exploit border corridors for movement and logistics.

The military explained that troops acted professionally by detaining the individual for profiling and further investigation after intercepting him under circumstances considered suspicious during the operation.
However, the statement said detailed intelligence assessments and other investigative processes found no evidence linking Zein-Nur to any known terrorist organisation.
Investigators further established that he is a resident of Shattu Anguba Village in Bosso, Republic of Niger, and earns a living as a camel rearer, grazing livestock beyond the River Komadougou.
Based on the findings, Operation Hadin Kai officially cleared the individual of any terrorist affiliation.
The Theatre Command reiterated that all persons intercepted under suspicious circumstances during military operations are subjected to due process and appropriate security screening to distinguish innocent civilians from terrorist elements.
It reaffirmed the Joint Task Force’s commitment to conducting counter-terrorism operations with professionalism while respecting human rights and the rule of law.
Operation Hadin Kai also pledged to remain steadfast in denying terrorist groups freedom of action across the North-East while ensuring that security operations adhere to established legal and operational standards.
