PHOTO: Troops Rescue Bungudu LG Chairman’s Family, Intensify Search for Abducted Chairman in Zamfara
Troops of the Joint Task Force North West, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, have rescued five family members of the Executive Chairman of Bungudu Local Government Area of Zamfara State, Hon. Nura Umar Abdullahi, following a terrorist attack on his residence, while efforts have intensified to secure the release of the abducted council chairman.
The Chairman was kidnapped in the early hours of Saturday, July 25, 2026, after heavily armed terrorists stormed his residence, overpowering his police escorts and local vigilante personnel.
According to the Joint Task Force, troops responded immediately after hearing gunfire and swiftly mobilised to the scene, engaging the fleeing terrorists in a fierce gun battle.
The military said the prompt intervention forced the attackers to abandon five members of the Chairman’s family, who were rescued unharmed. Those rescued include his wife, mother, two children and another relative.
Despite the rescue, the terrorists reportedly escaped into nearby bushes with the council chairman.

The attack, however, claimed the lives of two police officers and one local vigilante, who were killed while resisting the assailants. A civilian also lost his life during the incident, while the Chairman’s elder brother, Alhaji Bello Umar, sustained injuries.
Following the abduction, the Theatre Command activated a coordinated search-and-rescue operation involving troops of Operation FANSAN YAMMA, the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services (DSS) and local vigilante groups.
Security forces are currently conducting targeted operations in suspected terrorist hideouts in a bid to rescue the abducted chairman safely.
The Theatre Command said all available operational resources had been deployed for the ongoing mission and assured the Zamfara State Government and residents that every lawful measure was being taken to secure the Chairman’s release.
It also appealed to members of the public to remain calm, continue their lawful activities and provide credible intelligence through established security channels to support the rescue operation.
The military reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property, pledging to sustain joint operations with other security agencies until Hon. Abdullahi is rescued and those responsible for the attack are apprehended and brought to justice.
