RATTAWU honours DSS DG for strategic intelligence, national security
The Radio, Television, Theatre and Arts Workers Union (RATTAWU) has honoured the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Oluwatosin Ajayi, with its “Golden Era Pillar of Critical and Strategic Intelligence for National Development Award.”
The award was presented to Ajayi on Thursday in Abuja as part of activities marking RATTAWU’s 50th anniversary.
The union’s National President, Emeka Kalu, led a delegation to the DSS headquarters for a media, security and strategic partnership engagement focused on national development.
Kalu commended President Bola Tinubu for appointing Ajayi as DSS Director-General in 2024, describing the appointment as “a round peg in a round hole.”
He said the award was instituted by the union to recognise individuals and institutions that had made outstanding contributions to Nigeria’s national development, security, democracy, culture and creative sectors.
Kalu said the DSS played a critical role in safeguarding Nigeria’s national interests through intelligence gathering and support for national security operations.

He noted that the importance of such responsibilities had become more pronounced amid evolving security threats and emerging technological challenges confronting the country.
“Your appointment by Mr President demonstrates the importance of placing capable Nigerians with integrity and professional competence in strategic positions of national responsibility,” Kalu said.
He added, “The role of the DSS in protecting Nigeria’s national interests, gathering critical intelligence and supporting national security cannot be overemphasised.
“Particularly now that this country is confronted with complex security and emerging technological challenges, appointments like yours are the best ever done by Mr President.
“That is why this union decided to honour you with the Golden Era Pillar of Critical and Strategic Intelligence for National Development Award.”
Responding, Ajayi expressed appreciation to the RATTAWU leadership for the recognition.
The DSS Director-General described the award as a significant gesture that would further motivate him and the Service to remain committed to their responsibilities and service to the nation.
