FG Commissions Flood Project in Yobe

The Honourable Minister of State for Power, Works and Housing, Honourable Mustapha Baba Shehuri has commissioned and handed over a flood and soil erosion control project in Damaturu, Yobe State. The projects was executed by the Federal Government through the Ecological Fund Office in the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.

In his Keynote Address, the Minister stated that the project was approved and awarded by the Federal Executtive Council in 2017 to Amijapp (Nigeria) Limited with a completion period of nine months. It was completed in August, 2018.

While handing over the project to the Executive Governor of Yobe State, His Excellency, Alhaji Ibrahim Geidam in Damaturu, the Minister disclosed that it is expected to address the devastating effects of flooding and erosion, as well as minimise threats to lives and properties within Damaturu township and adjoining communities.

Shehuri posited that the execution of the project in the state is in keeping faith with President Muhammadu Buhari’s Administration promise that no part of the country will suffer any form of neglect owing to its geographical location or political party affiliation. He commended the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Mr. Boss Mustapha and his team at the Ecological Fund Office, the Contractor, Messrs Amijapp (Nigera) Limited and the Consultants, Messrs Abiss Associate (Nigeria) Limited for a job well done!

The Permanent Secretary, Ecological Fund Office, Dr. Habiba Lawal stressed, through the Deputy Director, Erosion and Flood Control, Alhaji Auwalu Sani, that the project originated from a request for urgent intervention forwarded by the Senate Majority Leader, Senator Ahmed Lawan soliciting for the Federal Government to, permanently, arrest the erosion menace occasioned by perennial flooding, in some parts of the state.

Earlier, the Executive Governor of Yobe State, Alhaji Ibrahim Geidam stated, through his Commissioner for Environment, Engr. Jibrin Kortoni maintained that the people of the state are appreciative to Mr. President for coming to their rescue.

His Excellency, Alhaji Geidam also used the opportunity to appeal to the Federal Government to assist the state by constructing drain channels in Babban Gida and Yusufari, check gully erosion at a Grave Yard in Geidam and Damagum, control flood at Bultumari, amongst others.

In a similar vein, Hon. Shehuri also commissioned and handed over the completed erosion and flood control project at Nguru, Nguru Local Government Area to the Yobe State Government. The Minister enjoined the host community and other Nigerians residing in Nguru not to dump waste indiscriminately in the newly constructed drains in order to avoid a blockage.

He charged all and sundry to ensure the sustainability of the two projects as treasures bequeathed by the Federal Government for the common good of the entire citizenry.
