NEMA Sensitizes Kano Students on Fire, Flood, Road Safety
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Kano Operations Office, has called for stronger household and community preparedness to reduce disaster risks, as it commemorated the 2026 International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction (IDDRR) with an inter-school safety quiz competition in Kano.
The event, held on Tuesday, October 13, featured students from Sa’adatu Rimi College Staff School and Federal Government College, Kano, who tested their knowledge of fire prevention, flood preparedness and road safety.
The commemoration was organised around the global theme, “Resilience Starts at Home,” which highlights the importance of household safety, public awareness, responsible environmental practices and prompt responses to early warnings in preventing disasters and reducing their impact.
NEMA reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening disaster preparedness, promoting community resilience and coordinating efforts among relevant stakeholders to minimise disaster risks across the country.
The agency emphasised that disaster risk reduction was a shared responsibility requiring sustained collaboration among government institutions, communities, the private sector and individuals.
