2027: Segun Showunmi Backs Tinubu’s Re-election, Says Nigeria Needs Continuity for Economic Prosperity
The Convener of The Alternative Movement, Otunba Segun Showunmi, has declared his support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election in 2027, arguing that continuity in government would provide an opportunity to consolidate ongoing economic reforms, strengthen national stability and accelerate development across Nigeria.
Showunmi, who identified himself as a member of the Tinubu/Shettima Presidential Campaign Council for 2027, made the declaration at a press conference in Abuja, where he presented a statement titled “Nigeria Must Not Abandon Its Journey to Prosperity: President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Promise of a Greater Nigeria, National Stability and Prosperity for All.”
He maintained that Nigeria was at a critical stage in its development, requiring sustained policy implementation, productive investment, institutional strengthening and greater attention to the economic well-being of ordinary citizens.
According to him, the 2027 presidential election presents Nigerians with an opportunity to determine whether to sustain the direction of the Tinubu administration’s economic reform programme.
“My position is clear: I support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a second term because I believe Nigeria must keep moving forward,” Showunmi declared.
He argued that the country’s longstanding economic challenges, including inadequate infrastructure, limited industrial productivity, unemployment and dependence on crude oil, required consistent policies and long-term development planning.
Showunmi described Tinubu’s economic reforms as an attempt to address structural weaknesses, strengthen public finances, attract investment and create conditions for sustainable growth.
He acknowledged that the ultimate measure of the reforms would be their impact on employment, household incomes, business opportunities and access to essential services.
According to him, Nigeria must move beyond managing its economic difficulties to building a productive and competitive economy capable of generating wealth for its citizens.
“We are not simply trying to manage an economy. We are building the foundations of a nation that can compete, produce, innovate and prosper,” he said.
The political figure identified manufacturing, agriculture, agro-processing, technology, solid minerals, petrochemicals, gas, tourism and logistics as sectors capable of driving economic diversification.
He urged the government to prioritise policies that would enable local businesses to expand, attract productive foreign investment, strengthen supply chains and position Nigeria as a manufacturing and logistics hub for West and Central Africa.
Showunmi also highlighted several initiatives of the Tinubu administration, including the Nigerian Education Loan Fund, the Electricity Act 2023, infrastructure development, healthcare reforms, agricultural programmes and changes to the country’s taxation system.
He said the student loan scheme had created an additional financing pathway for eligible students, while the electricity legislation had opened opportunities for states to develop electricity markets within the applicable regulatory framework.
On infrastructure, he cited the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway, Sokoto–Badagry Super Highway and Abuja–Kaduna–Zaria–Kano highway as examples of projects intended to improve transportation, regional commerce and economic integration.
He argued that investments in roads, electricity, education and healthcare should ultimately reduce business costs, improve productivity and expand opportunities for Nigerians.
However, he stressed that the success of such initiatives would depend on effective implementation and their ability to produce measurable improvements in citizens’ living standards.
“The ultimate purpose of this national transformation is to improve the lives of ordinary Nigerians,” he said.
Showunmi maintained that economic development must benefit farmers, traders, artisans, workers, entrepreneurs and young graduates rather than remain confined to government statistics and policy announcements.

He said greater access to finance, reliable electricity, improved transportation, quality education and affordable healthcare would help households and businesses participate more effectively in the economy.
“Prosperity is within our reach, and we must work together to make it a reality for everyone,” he stated.
He added that economic reforms should be judged by their contribution to employment, incomes, essential services and improved living conditions across the six geopolitical zones.
The convener also identified national security as a major requirement for sustainable development, noting that insecurity continued to affect farming, commerce, education, investment and community life.
He called for stronger coordination among the Armed Forces, police, intelligence services and other security institutions, alongside improved personnel welfare and operational effectiveness.
According to him, security interventions must be complemented by economic opportunities, justice, community development and stronger local institutions.
“Our farmers must be able to cultivate their land. Our traders must be able to transport their goods. Our children must be able to attend school. Our businesses must be able to operate,” he said.
On youth development, Showunmi urged the government to expand technical and vocational education, digital skills training, entrepreneurship financing and opportunities in emerging industries.
He said Nigeria’s youthful population could become a major economic advantage if education and training were better aligned with the needs of industry.
The political figure further advocated increased investment in manufacturing, renewable energy, technology, agriculture and the creative economy to reduce unemployment and provide opportunities for young Nigerians.
He argued that Nigeria should aspire to become a country where young people could build successful businesses and professional careers without necessarily seeking opportunities abroad.
Showunmi also called for a stronger Nigerian presence in regional and global markets through increased exports, industrial development, innovation and investment in human capital.
He said the country’s population, natural resources, geographical position and entrepreneurial capacity provided opportunities for greater economic influence, provided appropriate policies were sustained.
Speaking on the forthcoming presidential election, Showunmi maintained that his support for Tinubu was based on what he described as the need for policy continuity, accelerated implementation and consolidation of the administration’s development agenda.
He expressed the view that a second term should focus on expanding industrial capacity, improving infrastructure, strengthening security and ensuring that economic reforms translate into more visible benefits for citizens.
“A second term should be a period of accelerated delivery, expanded opportunity and a more visible connection between national economic progress and household prosperity,” he said.
Showunmi acknowledged that Nigerians would have the opportunity to assess the administration’s record and competing political alternatives during the 2027 election.
He nevertheless urged greater national attention to long-term economic planning, productive investment and institutional development.
The Alternative Movement convener concluded that Nigeria’s development ambitions should transcend political, ethnic, religious and regional differences.
He expressed optimism that sustained reforms, effective governance and improved national security could help the country achieve greater economic stability and inclusive growth.
“Nigeria must not abandon its journey to prosperity. We must sustain the momentum, consolidate the gains and work together to ensure that the promise of a greater Nigeria reaches every household, every community and every corner of our federation,” Showunmi said.
He reiterated his support for Tinubu’s re-election under the message of national stability, economic transformation and continuity, while calling for policies that would ensure prosperity reaches ordinary Nigerians.
“Nigeria First. Continuity for Progress. Stability for Prosperity. A Greater Nigeria for All,” he concluded.
