Army Deploys 600 Troops to India for Specialised Jungle, Mountain Warfare Training
The Nigerian Army has commenced the deployment of 600 personnel to India for specialised jungle and mountain warfare training as part of efforts to enhance combat readiness and strengthen troops’ capacity to operate in difficult terrains.
The first batch of 300 personnel departed the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, on Thursday, October 22, 2026, aboard two Indian Air Force aircraft—a C-17 transport aircraft and an Airbus A321.
The Coordinator of the Nigerian Military Training Support and Advisory Team at the Army Headquarters Department of Army Training, Major General UG Yusuf, who represented the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, witnessed the departure alongside the Indian High Commissioner to Nigeria.
The training programme is designed to equip the troops with specialised skills for operating in dense forests, mountainous regions and other challenging environments where conventional military operations may be constrained by difficult terrain.

The initiative reflects Shaibu’s commitment to developing a professional, adaptable and combat-ready force capable of confronting terrorism, insurgency and other security threats across the country.
It also aligns with his command philosophy, which prioritises operational effectiveness, realistic training, personnel development and enhanced combat readiness.
According to the Army, the specialised training is expected to improve troops’ tactical proficiency, operational manoeuvrability and ability to conduct missions in difficult terrain. The programme will also strengthen their capacity to deny terrorists and other criminal groups safe havens in remote locations.
The deployment further underscores the growing defence cooperation between Nigeria and India, particularly in military training and capacity development.
The Army said arrangements were underway to transport the remaining 300 personnel to India to complete the deployment.
The initiative forms part of ongoing efforts by the Nigerian Army to improve professional competence, strengthen operational capabilities and sustain a mission-ready force capable of defending Nigeria’s territorial integrity and protecting lives and property.
