Lagos Airport Customs Sets Daily Revenue Record with ₦6.2bn Collection
The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Murtala Muhammed Airport Command (MMAC), has recorded its highest-ever daily revenue collection of ₦6.2 billion, representing an increase of approximately 432 per cent over its previous record of ₦1.16 billion.
The outgoing Customs Area Controller, Acting Assistant Comptroller-General of Customs (ACG) Godwin Otunla, disclosed this on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, during the formal handover of leadership to the new Acting Area Controller, Deputy Comptroller of Customs Mahmood Mundi.
Otunla said the command collected and remitted ₦175.68 billion to the Federal Government between January and October 2026, attributing the performance to sustained efforts to strengthen revenue generation, engage stakeholders and maintain a conducive working environment.
He said the command had adopted measures to curb revenue leakages, expand cargo scanning, conduct thorough cargo examinations and implement intelligence-driven risk management to improve compliance and revenue collection.
According to him, these measures have strengthened the command’s capacity to identify irregularities, enforce customs regulations and optimise revenue generation.

On anti-smuggling operations, Otunla disclosed that the command intercepted 178 packages of tramadol and 50 cartons of Canadian Loud, a cannabis strain, which were handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in accordance with existing laws.
He said the command remained committed to enforcing customs regulations while facilitating legitimate trade and protecting national interests.
In his remarks, the new Acting Customs Area Controller, Mundi, commended his predecessor for the achievements recorded and pledged to sustain the command’s performance through discipline, integrity and improved service delivery.
He emphasised the importance of stakeholder collaboration, particularly with importers, licensed customs agents and cargo terminal operators, in achieving the command’s objectives.
“Stakeholder engagement is indispensable to our success. Therefore, I look forward to sustaining cordial relationships with our importers, licensed customs agents, and cargo terminal operators, among others, whose cooperation and compliance will remain essential to achieving our shared objectives,” Mundi said.
The handover ceremony also featured goodwill messages from key stakeholders, who acknowledged the outgoing controller’s contributions to the command.
Otunla’s appointment as Acting ACG in charge of Human Resources Development marks his transition from the leadership of the Murtala Muhammed Airport Command to a new responsibility within the Nigeria Customs Service.
