Fact-Check: Did Julius Malema of South Africa Advocate Nigeria’s Disintegration over 2023 Elections?

Claim: A claim trending on social media states that the popular South African Politician, Activist and Freedom fighter, Julius Sello Malema has wondered why Nigeria is still one country despite the handling of the 2023 elections.

Full text: The claim which was posted by a facebook page Rising Sun History shared a photo of Malema with the accompanying text, “After watching 2023 Nigeria election, I am still wondering the reason Nigeria is still living together as a country.

“Nigerians hate themselves so much but find it difficult to separate peacefully. – Julius Malema, South African politician.”

Reacting, a Facebook user Justin Francis wrote, “Nigeria are doing that by being calm to see the out come of the court proceedings with a view to May 29th handover ,for if the lie and evil want to prevail by then, the people of peace will revolve out with one mind on the same point and a change will occur then ,so when a man is silent, it does not mean that he is a fool (sic).”

Verification: PRNigeria fact-checkers copied the said text into a search engine but results returned show no news coverage of Malema making such a comment except the tweets and posts resharing the same quotation turned up.

PRNigeria further comibined the keywords “Julius Malema and Nigeria,” but there was no news report in Nigerian or South African Media that showed Malema, leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) commented on Nigeria’s 2023 elections. Most news reports on Malema focused on him being at the forefront of the brewing opposition protests in South Africa where he vowed to end President Cyril Ramaphosa’s reign.

PRNigeria further checked his official Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook accounts, there is no single post or pictures showing Julius Malema criticizing Nigeria’s 2023 Presidential Elections or calling for the disintegration of the country.

Conclusion: Findings by PRNigeria reveals that Julius Malema has not commented on Nigeria’s general elections as at March 21, 2023.

PRNigeria therefore concludes that the claim that Malema advocated for the disintegration of Nigeria due to the handling of the 2023 general election is FALSE
