Kaduna State Governor Mukhtar Ramalan Yero has distributed admission letters to 125 students being sponsored by the State Government under its Overseas Scholarship Scheme.

Speaking during the flag-off of the 2014/2015 Overseas Scholarship Awards in Kaduna Wednesday, the Governor said the state is sponsoring 22 PhD, 77 MSc and 26 MBBS candidates selected to pursue programmes in countries such as Malaysia, Ghana, South Africa, India, New Zealand, Egypt and Uganda.

He said “the candidates were selected after a thorough screening exercise with all the 23 Local Government Areas equitably represented. The present administration has so far spent a cumulative sum of N1.4billion on internal and external scholarships since we assumed Office on 16thDecember, 2012 in addition to a recent approval for the disbursement of N119,992,692.00 as scholarship to new students.”

Yero said the scheme was initiated to improve the manpower capacity of the state saying “let me reiterate our determination towards improving the human capital to accelerate socio-economic development of the State.

“It is in furtherance of this resolve that we established the Postgraduate Overseas Scholarship Scheme with the aim of provision of the required manpower in such critical areas of Medical Sciences, Engineering, and Applied and Natural Sciences.”

Twenty nine (29) 300 level medical students of Kaduna State University (KASU) have earlier benefitted from the overseas scholarship scheme to enable them complete their clinical studies in Kampala International University, Uganda.
