SGBV Survivors to Get Justice within 48 Hours – Minister Assures

The Minister of Women Affairs, Barrister Uju Kennedy Ohanenye, has pledged to implement strict laws to punish those who molest women and girls in Nigeria.

She said the Ministry has worked with the Governors’ Forum to get approval to establish a mobile court that will reduce the time frame used to prosecute perpetrators.

The minister disclosed this today at a joint press briefing in Abuja to mark the 2023 ’16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence’, in Abuja.

“The establishment of mobile courts will significantly reduce the time frame for prosecuting GBV perpetrators, ensuring that survivors receive justice without undue delay”, she said.

Barrister Ohaneye said the Federal Government will roll out different empowerment programs in a sustainable way through various training and skills acquisition programs.

She said the programs will also include skill acquisition programs, capacity building, and how to report SGBV cases in local languages.

“In addition to establishing mobile courts, the Federal Government is also implementing a range of empowerment programs to support survivors of GBV.

“These programs include skills acquisition training, capacity building workshops, and education on reporting GBV cases in local languages.

Ohanenye stated that paid informants would be used, and mobile courts would be used to bring cases against those responsible for FGM and other types of gender-based violence.

She further explained that these mobile courts will serve as a deterrent to potential offenders, sending a clear message that GBV will not be tolerated.
