Bauchi Police ready for NLC protests, warns against violence

The Bauchi State Police Command has assured the public of its readiness to maintain law and order ahead of the planned nationwide protests by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The NLC had announced its intention to embark on a two-day protest across the country to demand for better working conditions and welfare for workers.

In a statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Ahmed Mohammed Wakil, the Command said it has deployed high octane patrols in major parts of the state to reassure citizens of its unwavering commitment towards their safety.

The statement also said the police respects the constitutional rights of every citizen to peaceful protest, including legitimate labour unions, and warned the protesters to ensure all processions are conducted within the guidance of the law.

Wakil also said the command, in conjunction with relevant security agencies in the state, vowed to subdue any individual or groups that may willfully hide behind the peaceful protests to cause havoc and breach of public peace and safety in the state.

The Command also warned against any attempt by reckless miscreants or hoodlums to leverage the processions to perpetrate violence or criminality, saying it will resist such acts in every manner humanely possible within the ambit of the law.

It then advised the people of the state to go about their normal businesses without any fear of harassment or molestation and urged them to report any suspicious move to Police to immediately.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Auwal Musa Mohammed, urged parents and guardians to caution their wards not to be used as cannon-fodders to jeopardize what he described as the relatively enduring peace being enjoyed in the state.
