The Army Headquarters Department of Special Services and Programmes (DSSP) has organized a comprehensive 5-day Capacity Building Workshop aimed at bolstering the proficiency of Nigerian Army personnel in Protocol and Liaison duties. The opening ceremony, was held at Okunola Hall, Army War College Asokoro Abuja on 23 April 2024.

In his address, Lieutenant General TA Lagbaja, the Chief of Army Staff, emphasized the importance of adhering to global standards and regulations in diplomatic protocols. Represented by Major General Jimmy Akpor, the Chief of Administration (Army), Lt Gen Lagbaja highlighted the vital role of Protocol and Liaison functions in maintaining cordial relations with allies and stakeholders. He said, with the ever-increasing demands on military engagements, particularly in bilateral contacts and domestic liaisons, the workshop serves as a crucial platform for enhancing the capacity of army personnel in this domain.

Despite acknowledging the volatile and uncertain security environment, General Lagbaja reassured the participants of the Nigerian Army’s professionalism and readiness to ensure peace and security in the nation. He underscored the importance of continuous training and professional development in fulfilling the Directorate of Protocol’s mandate effectively. General Wesley said the Nigerian Army’s dedication to upholding integrity, professionalism, and excellence in Protocol and Liaison duties reflects its commitment to national security and diplomatic engagement.

During the opening day of the Workshop, participants were treated to two insightful lectures. The first lecture, “Options for Building a Versatile Protocol Capacity for the Nigerian Army,” delivered by Amb Ben BM Okoyen, provided strategic perspectives and practical approaches for developing a robust protocol capacity within the Nigerian Army, emphasizing adaptability and versatility in addressing diverse diplomatic scenarios. Following this, Mrs Sonye Allanah’s lecture on “Basic Norms and Practices for Enhancing Protocol/Liaison” offered participants foundational insights into diplomatic etiquettes, procedures, and best practices, equipping them with essential skills for fostering effective communication and collaboration in diplomatic interactions.

The event was further embellished with memorable moments, including the presentation of souvenirs to the Special Guest of Honour, Moderators, and discussant, symbolizing appreciation for their invaluable contributions to the workshop.
