Benue Police Foil Bandits’ Ambush, Neutralize 12, Lose 1 Personnel

The Benue State Police Command has confirmed the death of 12 armed bandits and one police officer, Inspector Terfa Anyiatse, following a deadly ambush in Buruku Local Government Area.

According to a statement released on Wednesday by the command’s spokesperson, Catherine Anene, the confrontation occurred during a raid by the Operation Zenda Joint Task Force targeting criminal hideouts across the state.

“On March 19, 2025, at about 2:00 a.m., operatives en route to a suspected criminal enclave in Agwabi, Tombo ward, were ambushed by armed bandits, leading to a fierce exchange of gunfire,” Anene stated.

She explained that the police responded with superior firepower, successfully overpowering the assailants. Twelve of the gunmen were neutralized, while others fled with injuries. Those wounded were taken to the hospital, where they were later confirmed dead.

Recovered from the scene were three AK-47 rifles, six rounds of live ammunition, camouflage uniforms, and various charms believed to be used for protection.

However, the operation also recorded a casualty as Inspector Anyiatse sustained fatal gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the hospital. His remains have been deposited at the morgue.

The police assured residents of continued efforts to rid the state of criminal elements, urging communities to provide intelligence to support security operations.
