Uromi Killings: We Demand Justice, Public Parade of Culprits – Gov. Yusuf Tells Okpebholo

Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf has urged his Edo State counterpart, Monday Okpebholo, to ensure the public parade of those responsible for the gruesome murder of 16 northern travellers in Uromi, Edo State.

Speaking on Monday while receiving a delegation led by Governor Okpebholo in Kano, Yusuf lamented the horrific attack, emphasizing that many of the victims hailed from Kano State. He stressed that justice must be served to prevent future occurrences of such violence.

“It is a known fact that our people were traveling from Port Harcourt through Edo State when they were brutally attacked. Many were maimed, burnt, and murdered in cold blood,” Yusuf said. “Kano people trust you, and you have assured us that the perpetrators will be brought to justice. We appeal to you to ensure that they are not only arrested but also paraded publicly so that the world sees those responsible for this heinous crime.”

Governor Yusuf commended the swift response of the Edo State government and the security agencies in making some arrests. However, he insisted that beyond arrests, a transparent and publicized legal process was necessary to assure citizens of the authorities’ commitment to justice.

In his remarks, Governor Okpebholo reaffirmed Edo’s commitment to justice and disclosed that 14 suspects had already been arrested and were being transferred to Abuja for further investigation. He assured Kano residents that security agencies were working tirelessly to apprehend all those involved.

“I want to assure you that Mr. President was deeply disturbed by this incident and has directed security agencies to spare no effort in bringing the perpetrators to book,” Okpebholo stated.

The massacre has drawn nationwide condemnation, with President Bola Tinubu, the Northern Governors Forum (NGF), Amnesty International, various Muslim organizations, and concerned Nigerians demanding a thorough investigation and prosecution of the culprits.

Governor Yusuf reiterated Kano’s commitment to national unity and peaceful coexistence, warning against reprisal attacks while calling on security agencies to take decisive action against individuals who incite violence. He further urged political and community leaders to collaborate in preventing such tragedies in the future.
